The New York Jets regime under Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey nailed their 2025 offensive colors to Justin Fields' mast in free agency, signing him to a two-year, $40 million deal.
It wasn't long after that the franchise announced him as the starter for the season, which some saw as a little odd, given Tyrod Taylor was already in the building and a quarterback battle might have ensued.
But the Jets felt confident in Fields' ability to take the offense forward and put it in a better spot than what Aaron Rodgers did.
But as far as handing Fields the keys to the offense with competition? Jets general manager Darren Mougey doubled down on that decision.
“We feel really good about Justin as our starter moving forward and believe in Justin and we can win with Justin and he was a priority in free agency and we’re glad we got him here," Mougey said.
So the Jets are more than happy with Fields as the starter.
Granted, his two-year deal gives the franchise great flexibility as if things don't work out well in 2025, the Jets can move on and remain relatively unscathed from a cap perspective.
If things do go well, the franchise will have Fields for "just" $20 million APY in 2026, which is a bargain for a starting quarterback.
So while some thought that it was a little odd for Fields to be immediately thrust into the starting role, it is clear the Jets have confidence in his ability to make Tanner Engstrand's unit good and win games in 2025.
Sometimes, belief is all a player needs, and Justin clearly has that in spades from the organization.
