Folk worked out for the green and white on Monday, July 28, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. Over the last two seasons he has been the league leader in field goal conversion rate.

“Listen, he is a very established kicker in this league. When you go back and look at his stats from the last couple of years, they have been above board. I’ve said this from the beginning, anybody that can help us win games, man, we’re going to take a look at that. Obviously he was available and the terms worked out,” Jets head coach Aaron Glenn explained at his media availability.

Jets Abruptly Make a Kicker Change in the Middle of Training Camp

This offseason, the Jets decided to do a youth movement for the overall roster and specifically on special teams.

The old veterans, Greg Zuerlein and Thomas Morstead, got tossed with the bath water. Instead, the regime preferred cheaper alternatives.

At placekicker, the Jets brought in Harrison Mevis and undrafted free agent rookie Caden Davis. The commonality between them is that neither had kicked in an NFL game before.

Earlier in training camp, it looked like neither had performed at this level.

“It’s too early to say there’s a kicking crisis, but it wasn’t pretty at practice. It was a rough day for rookie Caden Davis and former UFL standout Harrison Mevis, both of whom missed multiple field-goal tries. Davis uncorked a shank that wasn’t even close. The Jets are taking a risk by having two kickers with no NFL experience. Glenn said he’s ‘not about to panic,’ but that sentiment could change if things don’t improve. You can bet they have a short list of available vets,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini said on Thursday, July 24.

The Jets parted ways with Davis on Tuesday, July 29.

Jets HC Aaron Glenn Slams Age Narrative Created This Offseason

This offseason, new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn got rid of a lot of the older talent on the roster.

Only three players, prior to this Folk signing, were 30 years of age or older on the Jets roster.

That list included, in order from oldest to youngest: backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor (35), longsnapper Thomas Hennessy (31), and wide receiver Josh Reynolds (30), per the Jets’ official roster sheet.

Some analysts have joked on social media that Glenn doesn’t care for having older players.

“Listen, do we want younger players? Absolutely. It’s a young man’s game, but we want players that can help us win. So if those players happen to be 30 years old, we get those players,” Glenn said. “It just so happened that we got younger while we got players who can help us win.”

A lot of people have cracked jokes that #Jets HC Aaron Glenn hates old people with there being only 3 players on roster who are 30 or older [per team website].

However AG told ESPN’s Rich Cimini that he is open to adding the right veteran of the older variety: 👴🏽

It appears Glenn believes Folk can help them win games, even at 40 years of age.
