Jonathan Allen reveals gut-wrenching regret behind Commanders' exit

Jonathan Allen's expiry date with the Washington Commanders arrived as expected this offseason. The veteran defensive tackle knew it. Adam Peters did too, which resulted in an amicable parting that was handled impeccably by the franchise.

That didn't stop Allen from having one major regret regarding his exit. Something that could have altered the landscape had it occurred much sooner.

Allen's production no longer matched his price tag. His prime years were wasted by the previous regime, who couldn't find the right formula with an absent owner who'd gone into reclusive mode amid constant (and concerning) allegations that eventually resulted in a record-breaking fine. When the Commanders turned the page and their new project hit the ground running, the former Alabama star couldn't keep up.

A torn pectoral didn't help, but Allen would be the first to admit his performances weren't up to the required standard overall. When a trade suitor didn't come forward, the Commanders did right by the player after he gave so much to the cause in difficult circumstances throughout his career.

Jonathan Allen admitted it was hard to leave Commanders' improved culture behind

Allen is looking forward to embracing a new challenge with the Minnesota Vikings. However, there was some regret about leaving the improved culture behind.

"The Commanders had a really great culture last year, and that was the hardest part about leaving."

The two-time Pro Bowler's frustrations threatened to boil over on countless occasions during Ron Rivera's final season at the helm in 2024. Years of constant losing and underachievement had taken their toll on the former Alabama standout. Allen wanted better for himself and the franchise. Dan Quinn's appointment as the team's new head coach changed everything.

Allen was regenerated last spring, marveling at the improved atmosphere around the building. He was excited to come to work. Quinn's remarkable shift in culture was the beacon of positivity the Commanders sorely lacked previously. The lineman's desire to get back for Washington's postseason run when all hope seemed lost spoke volumes.

The Commanders eventually fell short in the NFC Championship game, but it was the best possible start to this exciting project. Allen won't be part of it anymore, which was disappointing after he experienced almost nothing but misery since being drafted by the organization in 2017. But it's something he probably accepted from a long way out.

Washington will move forward with Daron Payne, Johnny Newton, and free-agent signing Javon Kinlaw as their defensive tackle trio. As for Allen? He is turning his attention to helping the Vikings build on a 14-win campaign that came with an early playoff exit.

This is all part of the business. The Commanders gave Allen the respect he deserved on his way out the door. Looking back is not an option for the player. He must focus on what comes next.

Even if he'll be looking at any further success the Commanders have with a tinge of sadness attached.
