Conversations about Jonathan Kuminga’s future with the Golden State Warriors keep getting louder. The debates center around two key possibilities for the young forward.
Either Kuminga becomes a trade asset to help Golden State acquire another star, or he develops into the franchise’s next cornerstone. The basketball world remains split on which path makes more sense.
Recently, former NBA player Chandler Parsons joined the discussion with strong opinions about Kuminga’s career trajectory. The former Dallas Mavericks star believes the young forward has immense potential but needs a change of scenery to unlock it.
Parsons sees untapped potential in Kuminga
The veteran pointed to Kuminga’s performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves as proof of his capabilities. When Stephen Curry was sidelined, Kuminga stepped up as the Warriors’ primary scorer and delivered impressive results that caught Parsons’ attention.
Despite recognizing this talent, Parsons believes Kuminga’s skill set doesn’t align with Golden State’s established system. The former player thinks a different franchise could better maximize the young forward’s natural abilities and raw athleticism.
“I’m a big Jonathan Kuminga guy and I understand that when Jimmy Butler came there, that maybe kind of altered his production and his minutes,” Parsons said told Run It Back.
“But the fact that I watched his team play and when Steph Curry went out, he just plugged him right back in. He still had a level of success and professionalism to go do what he did.”

Restricted free agency creates opportunity for Kuminga
Building on his playoff observations, Parsons emphasized how Kuminga’s performance revealed his true ceiling as a player.
The former star believes this summer’s restricted free agency period could be the perfect opportunity for both Kuminga and interested teams.
“That series showed me all I need to know about Jonathan Kuminga. He is a restricted free agent and I hope that someone offers him a big deal that the Warriors probably won’t match.
“Or they do a sign and trade which I think makes the most sense to them.”
System mismatch could seal Kuminga’s fate
While praising Kuminga’s talent, Parsons highlighted the fundamental disconnect between the young player’s style and Golden State’s system. This philosophical difference could ultimately drive the separation both sides might need.
“He’s so young. He’s raw, he’s not like a system guy necessarily. He might not fit that offense and free flow and motion of the Warriors but there’s plenty other teams and organizations that he will have a lot of success just on his raw athleticism and development.”
One lingering issue in the Kuminga situation involves Golden State’s ball-dominant system.
Many analysts believe the Warriors’ reliance on Curry and now Butler, facilitated through playmakers like Draymond Green, limits opportunities for ball-handling forwards like Kuminga to showcase their decision-making abilities.
This system conflict could ultimately determine whether Kuminga stays in Golden State or finds a new home where his talents can flourish.
