The Dallas Cowboys irked their fans in the off-season by failing to make adequate trades to improve their roster. Unsurprisingly, the team has struggled to win games, sitting in third place in the NFC East with a 3-5 record.
Dallas acquired wideout Jonathan Mingo and a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Carolina Panthers before Tuesday’s trade deadline in exchange for a fourth-round pick. While the 39th overall pick of the 2023 draft is no star, he can have a significant impact on the Cowboys’ offense, at least that is what Jerry Jones believes.
During his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan , Jerry Jones spoke highly of Mingo and revealed that the team had been hoping to get him since the 2023 draft.
We wanted Mingo when we left that draft. We were disappointed we didn’t get him. We found out that he could be available. When we found that out, we started a dialogue there. We were looking at a player we had a big interest in when he was coming out. He fits the profile of what we want. He’s the type of receiver that is Dak friendly.
Jerry Jones said
The Cowboys’ GM is certain that Jonathan Mingo is the ideal receiver for Dak Prescott and will fit perfectly into the team’s offensive system.
Jonathan Mingo is enthusiastic to be a part of the Cowboys
The former wideout out of Mississippi has 12 receptions for 121 yards this season. The Panthers have failed to utilize him which is why the team did not hesitate to trade him. Despite having immense upside potential, Mingo has not gotten the shot to prove himself in the NFL. He has just two games in his career with over four catches.
The wide receiver expressed optimism at being in Dallas.
I’m here now so I can prove to people what I can do and show them the best version of me…Dak’s pretty cool too, he’s hurt but pretty cool guy to talk to…everybody around here seems pretty cool, so I’m excited to be on this team.
Jonathan Mingo said in his first press conference as a Cowboy
He will have to wait a while for Dak Prescott to throw him a pass, but until then, Jonathan Mingo will be able to get a hang of the team’s offensive playbook.
During his time at Ole Miss, Mingo started 12 games in his freshman year and finished with 172 yards and one touchdown. In his sophomore season, he had 379 yards and 3 touchdowns. He set a record in 2022 after breaking the University’s record for most receiving yards in a single game after he had 247 yards.
