A Strategic Shift in the Offense

On June 30, the Steelers traded for Smith, a move that has sparked discussions about how the versatile tight end might integrate into their offensive game plan. Gerry Dulac from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently shared insights on this topic during an appearance on 102.5 DVE’s Morning Show with Randy Baumann. Dulac suggested that Smith’s arrival could slow down the team’s pursuit of additional wide receivers.

“I think, at best, it slowed it down because they figure they can line him [up], flex him [out] and serve as another quote wide receiver,” Dulac explained. The implication here is clear: Smith’s versatility might allow the Steelers to reallocate their resources and focus on other areas of need.

As the Steelers prepare for training camp, the true impact of Smith’s addition will come into sharper focus. Dulac noted that the preseason will be telling in terms of the organization’s evaluation of its roster. “Training camp and the preseason will speak as to whether that is what they think is good going on,” he said. The coaching staff will assess whether the current lineup adequately addresses any weaknesses or gaps in their strategy.

The Trade Dynamics

The trade that brought Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh involved a deal with the Miami Dolphins, where the Steelers also acquired cornerback Jalen Ramsey. In exchange, they parted ways with safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, showcasing a willingness to reshape their roster for the upcoming season. The deal also included a swap of draft picks, with Pittsburgh giving up a 2027 fifth-round pick while receiving a seventh-round pick from Miami.

Though speculation about Smith’s role began immediately following the trade, it has evolved into a more substantial conversation. Insider Mark Kaboly reported that the Steelers view Smith as a multifaceted component within their offense. His ability to line up in various positions could provide the Steelers with new strategies and formations, potentially making him a pivotal player in their game plan.

As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on how the Steelers integrate Jonnu Smith into their lineup and whether his presence will lead to a different approach in acquiring additional wide receiver talent. The upcoming weeks promise to shed light on the team’s evolving strategies as they prepare for the challenges of the NFL season.
