The Pittsburgh Steelers have been a focal point of trade talks and potential signings this summer, particularly regarding wide receivers. However, the team’s recent acquisition of tight end Jonnu Smith could significantly alter their approach moving forward.
A Strategic Shift in the Offense
On June 30, the Steelers traded for Smith, a move that has sparked discussions about how the versatile tight end might integrate into their offensive game plan. Gerry Dulac from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently shared insights on this topic during an appearance on 102.5 DVE’s Morning Show with Randy Baumann. Dulac suggested that Smith’s arrival could slow down the team’s pursuit of additional wide receivers.
“I think, at best, it slowed it down because they figure they can line him [up], flex him [out] and serve as another quote wide receiver,” Dulac explained. The implication here is clear: Smith’s versatility might allow the Steelers to reallocate their resources and focus on other areas of need.
