Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Explains Why He Is High on Dontayvion Wicks
The Green Bay Packers have the youngest and one of the most exciting offenses in the NFL going into the 2024 regular season. This is quite the remarkable achievement considering that their biggest and most important skill positions are made up of entirely different players than they were two-three years ago.
Of course, Jordan Love has taken over the quarterback position from four-time NFL MVP and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. The running back position has gone from boasting Aaron Jones as its premier back to Josh Jacobs. 2020 second round pick AJ Dillon remains, but Green Bay signed Emanuel Wilson as an undrafted free agent last year and selected Marshawn Lloyd in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
The tight ends have seen Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan replaced by Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft. Ben Sims also was plucked off of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad last season to add some extra depth to the position.
The Green Bay Packers Have an Incredibly Talented and Deep Wide Receiver Room
While all of the offensive skill positions have gone through drastic transformations over the last couple of years, perhaps none are as surprising as that of the wide receiver room. The Packers went from having an All-Pro in Davante Adams along with veterans like Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard in 2021 to a room made up of rookies and second-year players in 2023.
While none of these players put up Adams-like numbers last season, the group as a whole was one of the most balanced receiving threats in the entire NFL:
Jayden Reed‘s 64 receptions were a Packers rookie record for a wide receiver, a record once held by Sterling Sharpe. While he missed nearly half the season, Christian Watson‘s five touchdowns, combined with his seven from 2022, were enough to give him more receiving touchdowns through two years (12) than any other wide receiver from the 2022 NFL Draft.
Interestingly, Romeo Doubs is right behind him with 11 after tying Reed for the team lead in touchdown receptions last season (eight). Even Bo Melton, who was signed off of the Seattle Seahawks practice squad in 2022, stepped up late in the season last year to be a big reason why Green Bay won their last two games.
But the wide receiver that has been getting the most hype this offseason from fans and media alike is 2023 fifth-round pick Dontayvion Wicks. As it happens, his quarterback, too, has bought into the hype and expects big things from him this season.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Thinks Dontayvion Wicks Will Have a Massive Season
In a recent video posted on Bleacher Report, Packers quarterback Jordan Love was asked which second-year player he thinks will have the biggest leap forward in 2024. His answer: Dontayvion Wicks.
“I think there are a lot of guys on our team that came onto the scene last year that may have surprised some people… but I think Dontayvion Wicks is going to have a monster year,” Love said. “I think he was able to do a lot of phenomenal things last year, and I think the sky is the limit for him.
“His confidence just keeps getting more and more, and raising up, obviously the more reps he gets, he’s getting more comfortable in the system, and he’s playing fast.
“So I think him and also Jayden Reed, both those guys were rookies last year, they did some awesome things. Those are two guys who are going to ball out this year and take the league by storm.”
If their rookie seasons were Wicks’ and Reed’s floors, the next few years should be very exciting in Green Bay.
