The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting ready for an important Week 7 showdown against the New York Jets this coming Sunday but there remains some ambiguity about who exactly will start under center for the team.
With Russell Wilson finally healthy, there is belief that the Steelers will turn to the veteran to handle QB1 duties for the team against the Jets. Meanwhile, others think that it's better for Pittsburgh to keep on starting Justin Fields, as the Steelers have done in each of their last six games.
On Thursday, Fields shared his thoughts on him getting potentially benched, beginning in the Jets game.
"I mean, I don't think I've played good enough, to be honest," a candid Fields said, per Nick Farabaugh of PennLive.com.
"I think if I did play well enough, I don't think there would be any sort of challenge. I've got a few wins... but there are areas that I could be better at."
That was a classy response from the former Ohio State Buckeyes star, given how the QB controversy has unfolded in Pittsburgh of late.
But at the end of the day, it will be up to Mike Tomlin and the Steelers coaching staff to decide which quarterback will best put Pittsburgh in a position to win.
The Steelers are 4-2 so far in the 2024 NFL season, and they just snapped a two-game skid with a 32-13 road win last Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders. Wilson was activated for that game, but Fields started and finished it, passing for just 145 yards with zero touchdowns on 14-of-24 pass completions. He was also sacked three times for a loss of 35 yards. Fields surely did not help his case for the permanent QB1 job with that performance, and he knows it.
On the season, Fields, who was traded by the Chicago Bears to Pittsburgh last March, has racked up 1,106 passing yards and five touchdowns with an interception on a 66.3 percent completion rate.
