Justin Fields could have Derrick Henry role for Steelers, says NFL insider

Things didn't work out for Justin Fields while he was with the Chicago Bears, and he is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bears selected quarterback Caleb Williams with the first pick in the NFL Draft, and he is expected to be a star. Now, Fields is battling things out with Russell Wilson for the QB1 job in Pittsburgh. Wilson is expected to win the job, but that doesn't necessarily mean we wouldn't see Fields on the field for the Steelers next season.

Justin Fields could have Derrick Henry role for Steelers, says NFL insider

Arthur Smith is the new offensive coordinator for the Steelers, and Smith worked with Derrick Henry while he was with the Tennessee Titans. A lot of people think that the Steelers will have some need for Justin Fields if he doesn't win the starting job, and ESPN's Jeremy Fowler thinks that he could be used similarly to Henry.

“Arthur Smith, the new OC, used Derrick Henry as a quarterback/passer when he was in Tennessee calling plays, so why couldn't you use a guy like Fields with his big-time ability?” Fowler said on NFL Live.

That would be interesting to see. At the end of the day, Fields is an extremely athletic QB, and that is why it will be hard for the Steelers to keep him off the field. Fowler has heard that Wilson is going to be the starter, but it sounds like there are some plans for Fields too.

“Russell Wilson's undisputably the QB number one,” Fowler said. “He's not splitting reps. However, I've talked to multiple teams who expect the Steelers to utilize Justin Fields as a runner and passer in the goal line, think eight yards and in.”

The Steelers offense is going to be an interesting one to watch next season. Wilson will likely be the starter, but he is in a similar position as Fields in the sense that things didn't work out for him at his previous stop either. Wilson was expected to be great with the Denver Broncos, but he did not meet expectations. We'll see if he can deliver in Pittsburgh.

Jeremy Fowler has heard that Russell Wilson is the guy for the Steelers, but Justin Fields recently talked about the QB battle, and he said that he's competing. He also said that the competition is making both him and Wilson better.

“I'm taking it day by day,” Fields said, according to an article from ESPN. “I'm definitely competing. I think [Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson] knows that we're competing against each other every day. Him being out there for me, that helps me getting better, especially each other. I definitely don't have the mindset of me just sitting all year. I'm coming in every day giving it all I got and pushing him to be his best, and he's pushing me to be my best each and every day.”
