Yet, only a year on, Fields was traded for minimal draft picks, with players like Sam Howell and Kenny Pickett now viewed as more desirable options by teams across the league. The Bears secured the top pick in the draft following their deal with the Carolina Panthers, seizing the chance to pick a once-in-a-lifetime talent like Caleb Williams.
But it appears that Chicago might have been ready to part ways with Fields regardless of landing Williams, as a former team insider highlighted his significant shortcomings.
An ex-Bears coach reportedly told 'Go Long': "Watch his eyes. He tries to see the whole thing and doesn't see anything. His eyes are all over the place and it's just really hard to watch. It's just bad football."
Fields has often been critiqued for his field vision and decision-making, with the athletic QB frequently opting to run rather than passing to open teammates. Fields had shown promise as a passer, but it was evident that the Bears were growing impatient with him, opting for rookie Tyson Bagent over Fields when he was fit to play.
The Chicago team has experienced significant staff changes over the past three years, including the dismissal of former head coach Matt Nagy. They're now preparing for their third offensive coordinator this coming season, having sacked Luke Getsy and appointed ex-Seattle Seahawks playcaller Shane Waldron in his place.

The lack of interest in Fields from the trade market was unusual, with some initially speculating he could secure a second or third-round draft pick - before being traded for a sixth and joining a team where he won't be the starting player.
The Steelers have already confirmed that Russell Wilson will be their first-choice quarterback - ahead of Fields - after acquiring the former Super Bowl champion from the Denver Broncos. Pittsburgh may also have some unconventional plans for Fields, with current running back Jaylen Warren hinting that he could be deployed as a kick returner - a role rarely filled by a quarterback.
Discussing kick returns before the new season, Warren revealed: "Our special teams coordinator was talking about Justin Fields being back there. And we all looked at him like, 'Justin Fields boutta be back there' But I think it's pretty cool, as soon as you touch the ball that's when everything starts to happen."
