Justin Simmons sends clear message the Commanders can't ignore

The Washington Commanders seem content with what they have in the secondary right now. But letting Jeremy Chinn walk in free agency leaves them short of dependability on the backend unless one of their fringe players takes a major leap.

Adam Peters won't hesitate to acquire another if he isn't entirely satisfied with how things are unfolding over the early stages of camp. And based on the comments made by veteran free-agent safety Justin Simmons, it's a clear message the team cannot ignore.

Simmons has been the subject of intense speculation after his time with the Atlanta Falcons ended. There was talk about the two-time Pro Bowler returning to the NFC South outfit, but he's aiming for higher.

During a recent discussion with Sean Keeler from The Denver Post, Simmons outlined that his primary objective is to land on a contender. That's the biggest goal, and he's willing to bide his time in pursuit of finding the right fit.

"I think Atlanta I would still pick 10 out of 10 times if I was in the spot last year. But in terms of where I’m at now, being a little bit more picky where we want to go and where we want to call home next… the next two years, a year, whatever it is… but a contender is No. 1 on the list right now."

Simmons is an experienced figure with some good football left. The Commanders will probably go with what they have for now, but plans can change quickly.

The most pivotal element is the fact that Washington has a shot to get players like Simmons these days. They are no longer a bottom feeder. They are a hotbed of activity and positivity. They are a trendy team and a coveted destination again. If Peters gave the defensive back a call, he'd legitimately consider the possibility.

Peters has faith in Quan Martin, Will Harris, Percy Butler, Jeremy Reaves, and Tyler Owens. But if an injury occurs or someone underperforms, they could do far worse than bring someone like Simmons' credentials into the fold to give their Super Bowl hopes a massive lift.

Until then, it's a waiting game. And someone else — perhaps the Philadelphia Eagles, due to Simmons' previous connection to Vic Fangio — could be preparing to pounce.
