The Kansas City Chiefs have a future that looks bright, with one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, if not the best, in Patrick Mahomes and a stable of healthy, equipped players going into the new season. After that brutal loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, which still stings for the Chiefs, the team is ready to right that wrong and hopefully give it another go.
Going into the upcoming season, however, no team is perfect, and the Kansas City Chiefs have some weaknesses. They don’t have as many weaknesses as many other NFL teams, but they aren’t totally set. So, what’ss the one thing the Chiefs have to work on to take things to the next level?
NFL Analyst Points Out a ‘Flaw’ in the Kansas City Chiefs
In a June 12 feature for Bleacher Report, Moe Moton names one “roster flaw” that could give trouble to a handful of teams that are favorites to make it to the Super Bowl. He notes that usually, it’s easy to see the weaknesses in the teams that aren’t very good, but it’s more difficult to see those weaknesses in stronger teams. So, utilizing information from DraftKings, he determined which teams have the best odds to win Super Bowl LX and named which issue could hold them back.
“Every year, fans’ hopes turn into despair when their team can’t overcome its flaws,” Moton states in the feature. “Sometimes, clubs are able to correct those issues early with personnel changes, roster moves and tweaks to game plans. Other times, a team’s downfall seems inevitable.”
For the Chiefs, he points out the team’s “left side of the offensive line” as being a possible area that bites them in the end.
“In Super Bowls LV and LIX, the Kansas City Chiefs, particularly Patrick Mahomes, struggled mightily against dominant defenses, resulting in blowout losses,” Moton notes. “Even the league’s best quarterback performs poorly when his offensive line crumbles under pressure.”
He adds that the Chiefs could start the new season “with two inexperienced starters on Mahomes’ blind side, which isn’t ideal for a strong start to the campaign.” In the end, he adds that “if the Chiefs swing and miss again at left tackle, with a project on the same side of the line, Mahomes will face a ton of pressure all season.”
Chiefs Fans Should Be Happy to See the Eagles’ Weakness
The Eagles are the reigning champs, but they’re still included on this roster. “This offseason, the Eagles lost Kellen Moore, who accepted the offer for the New Orleans Saints head coaching position, and promoted Kevin Patullo to fill the offensive coordinator role,” Morton notes.
So, Moton notes that they could struggle under the new offensive coordinator and there could be some growing paints with that move. He adds that, “The Eagles defense should remain stout with Vic Fangio still in place, but one has to wonder if Patullo can optimize the talent on the offensive side of the ball.”
