Kendre Miller says he's in the best shape of his career, and he looks like it

It might be now or never for Kendre Miller, but you don't have to tell him that. The New Orleans Saints drafted Miller in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft, and he has yet to break out in the league, much less meet the lofty expectations he set for himself. Now healthy and plenty motivated, this could finally be the year that he makes his name known.

One of the main things holding Miller back has been constant injuries. Over his first two seasons, he played in just 14 games. He missed all of the team's 2024 training camp after an injury on the first day of practice, and was still recovering from a college knee injury in his 2023 rookie year. He's dealt with a number of leg issues with his hamstring, knee and ankle. He also suffered a concussion last season towards the end of the year.

Across his first two years, the 23-year-old has totaled just 80 rushes for 304 yards with two touchdowns on the ground. He has also added 15 catches for 150 yards. Miller has had a nice start to this summer's training camp, though, and he has made it known that it is not by accident. He says he's in the best shape of his career. After playing at 220 or heavier, this offseason he worked hard to aim for a 215-pound playing weight.

"I feel normal now, finally. This is the most healthy I've been since I've been in the NFL," Miller said during a post-practice press conference. The team also highlighted an impressive rep from Monday's practice that backs this up, as Miller cut across the field, looking reminiscent of his college days.

With young quarterbacks taking snaps no matter who wins the competition for the starting spot, the run game will be very important for the Saints this season. The team will desperately need another back to step up behind Alvin Kamara.

Taysom Hill was the team's second-highest rusher last year with 278 yards in eight games. That would be a recipe for disaster if that were to happen again this time around. No other rusher had more than 170 yards on the ground. Miller is still very young despite being in his third season, so the team has been patient with him. It is starting to become make or break for him, though.
