Kliff Kingsbury braced for gut-wrenching offseason dilemma with huge ramifications

Kliff Kingsbury is facing an offseason dilemma.

Kliff Kingsbury

Kliff Kingsbury's outstanding contribution to the Washington Commanders this season wasn't going to go unnoticed. It took a while, but the offensive coordinator got his first two head coaching interview requests as the team gears up for their Wild Card game at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Kingsbury's taken the speculation in his stride. The Commanders were probably bracing for interest and have no doubt formed contingency plans in the event he takes the plunge. But it's all about finding the right fit rather than any financial incentive.

The respected play-caller doesn't need the money. Kingsbury is still getting paid by the Arizona Cardinals. He landed in a tremendous set-up and rekindled his love for coaching. There's a debt of gratitude attached, so it could go either way.

It's not hard to see why the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears want to examine Kingsbury's credentials in greater detail. His relentless work ethic, progressive thinking, and ability to nurture young quarterbacks are traits typically associated with successful NFL head coaches. Things didn't end well in Arizona, but it's not like he was completely incompetent.

Kliff Kingsbury's status with Commanders in 2025 remains uncertain

Kingsbury is focused on the Buccaneers and nothing more. He also revealed to John Keim of ESPN that money is not a motivating factor and that it would need to be a pretty good gig to leave Jayden Daniels.

"I didn't get into this to be a head coach again. It's not about money. It never has been about money. So, that won't move me at all. It's just I want to do the best job we can here for those guys and then kind of go from there. It would take a lot to leave this kid [Jayden Daniels]."

There's a good chance Kingsbury will speak with the two interested parties. NFL insider Josina Anderson revealed there could be more official approaches in the not-too-distant future. The Commanders need to focus on what they can control in this situation. Having a backup plan or two on hand is crucial.

Speculation continues around the league about whether Kingsbury is legitimately interested in becoming a head coach during this cycle. He's on to a good thing with Washington and could see things out. But there are only so many opportunities to go around when it's all said and done.

Any head coaching questions during Kingsbury's media availability before Wild Card weekend received an expected cagey response. There is still a job to do. Anything coming after that can wait.

The Commanders thought Kingsbury could reignite his career in Washington. They left it late, but a lengthier deal and a little help from Magic Johnson was enough to keep him from the Las Vegas Raiders.

This worked out pretty well for both parties. The Commanders are in a much better place than even the brightest optimist envisaged in Year 1 under head coach Dan Quinn. Kingsbury played a significant role and restored his reputation along the way.

It's the definition of a win-win situation. Time will tell as to whether or not this was a fleeting relationship.
