Latest 49ers injury should force John Lynch to take colossal measures

Another day at San Francisco 49ers training camp, another injury for fans to get to worry about. This time, it's wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

Latest 49ers injury should force John Lynch to take colossal measures

We heard yesterday about Jennings' setback when it came to his calf injury, and the startling part was, there is no timetable for his return. That, of course, is the last thing fans wanted to hear.

Combine the Jennings injury with Brandon Aiyuk also still recovering from his ACL injury and the 49ers are now drastically thin at the position. Even Ricky Pearsall is being eased back in after his return from injury, so the team has to navigate this all carefully.

Except, John Lynch should do anything but act careful going forward. Now is the time to get aggressive.

John Lynch has to act quickly after the latest Jauan Jennings injury update

Look, the 49ers are no strangers to injury woes. It has been one of the dominating storylines of this team for the past year or so.

Lynch has also not been shy about making moves, whether it's the Niners being on the receiving end or not. Speaking of which, this team already parted with Deebo Samuel. That's all fine and well, but after this Jennings setback, Lynch has to go out and get aggressive.

There are a few teams, right now, who could wind up either trading or cutting a talented wide receiver. Teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots come to mind, specifically. Those are two teams, among others, that Lynch should be talking to as we speak.

The Bucs could end up having to part with someone like third-year pro Trey Palmer who has flashed when given opportunities. Tampa Bay is simply loaded at the position after adding two more rookies in Emeka Egbuka and Tez Johnson.

The Patriots, meanwhile, are overflowing with youth at the position and there is no way they'll be able to keep all of the names currently on their depth chart. Players like Ja'Lynn Polk, Javon Baker and potentially others could be either traded or cut. And the former two are recent draft picks, both having plenty of football ahead of them.

What about making a call to the Washington Commanders now that Terry McLaurin wants out? It might sound crazy, but this is the type of aggression Lynch needs to be acting with.

Wherever Lynch ends up looking, he better start looking quickly. The 49ers still have a good amount of talent on this roster and, if their key players like Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle and Brock Purdy are still out there, this team has a chance on any given Sunday.

Lynch must get something done, because the current group is no where near enough to cut it. That's not to disregard Pearsall, rookie Jordan Watkins or the veteran Demarcus Robinson by any means. It's just the blatant truth. This offense needs more.
