Latest Brock Purdy contract news certainly dampens 49ers' mood

Not long ago, the 49ers seemed eager to get a deal done with Brock Purdy, but one team insider pumped the breaks on the positive momentum.

Latest Brock Purdy contract news certainly dampens 49ers' mood

Back at the NFL annual meeting in early April, the San Francisco 49ers' collective brass seemed more than just excited about a lucrative contract extension getting finalized with quarterback Brock Purdy.

Even CEO Jed York indicated a deal between franchise and franchise signal-caller seemed just about imminent.

"I don’t negotiate contracts," York toldThe Athletic's Matt Barrows from the meeting. "But any conversations I’ve had with Brock personally have been great. I feel good. And when he’s ready, we’ll sit down and finish it. It shouldn’t be that hard to do."

York also regarded Purdy as a top-10 quarterback, especially when paired with head coach Kyle Shanahan, leaving little doubt about whether or not San Francisco wants to retain the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft long term.

However, more recent updates from another 49ers insider don't suggest anything is close to being finalized whatsoever.

Matt Maiocco on Brock Purdy extension: 'It doesn't sound like anything's close'

Speaking on KNBR 680, NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco shed some light on the latest going on between Purdy's camp and the Niners.

The news is, well... not overly promising.

"The latest is that the 49ers have made an offer. It's kind of sitting out there," Maiocco reported. "Brock Purdy and his camp—and I don't know how much involved Brock is. I'm sure the agent is shielding him from a lot of this stuff. But the offer the 49ers have made isn't one that Brock Purdy's side is inclined to take at this point, nor will they."

Maiocco also pointed out how Purdy's camp likely sees the quarterbacking market as "set," which points to the 2023 MVP finalist receiving an extension that'd go north of $50 million per year, whereas the Niners would likely want to come in underneath that number.

You can listen to the full Maiocco interview on KNBR below:

"But right now, from my understanding, it doesn't sound like anything's close," Maiocco continued. "There will still be, I'm sure, a few more offers exchanged here in the coming weeks. Everybody seems to be confident that it'll get done eventually, but it's just kind of this back and forth."

Not long after the radio appearance, Maiocco clarified his stance on the current situation:

When I was on KNBR this morning, I was asked about Brock Purdy’s contract negotiations. Bottom line: Purdy’s side has not accepted what the 49ers want, and the 49ers have not accepted what the other side wants. That’s how negotiations work. In other words, nothing has changed.

Granted, it's a complex negotiation, although Purdy himself admitted he wants a drama-free process, one San Francisco hasn't always been able to avoid with previous star players undergoing extension talks.

That still might be true, but the latest scoop suggests the two sides are going to endure plenty of back-and-forth conversations for the foreseeable future.
