Latest NFL coaching hire should have Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin second-guessing his no-trade clause right about now

The Chicago Bears hired a new head coach on Monday, but his name wasnt Mike Tomlin.

Despite reportedly being interested in trading for the Pittsburgh Steelers HC, Ben Johnson will be the man handed the keys to one of the most historic franchises in the league, along with leading a generational QB prospect.

And that could have been Mike Tomlin, but the Steelers said no...

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin abruptly ends news conference as soon as reporter mentions his contract

Steelers deny Tomlin trade to Bears

The Bears recently called the Steelers to see whether they would be allowed to talk to and potentially try to trade for longtime head coach Mike Tomlin, only to have Pittsburgh rebuff their inquiry, league sources told ESPN.

Discussions never made it to Tomlin, nor is it likely they would they have been successful even if they did. When asked earlier this week about the idea that a team could inquire about his availability -- when in fact at least one team already had -- Tomlin responded: "Save your time."

To see the Steelers front officedeny the trade is no surprise. But essentially, Pittsburgh hitched their wagon to Tomlin despite not having won a playoff game in nearly a decade, and Tomlin chose the field (likely Justin Fields) to be his next QB over Caleb Williams.

"I thought that the way that he managed his professional circumstances was really impressive," said Tomlin when asked if Fields could be a 17 game starter and have pole position heading into 2025. "I thought he brought an urgency to his day-to-day work, regardless of his role. I thought he got continually better within our system of ball. Throughout the process, I thought the way he conducted himself, makes that a legitimate thought or idea at this juncture."

So it's a questionable decision for both. Tomlinn could have made a lateral move to one of the most historic franchises in all of the NFL, and the Steelers could have gained significant draft capital while getting a shot at top candidates like Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn or even Marcus Freeman.

"You know what the Chicago Bears would do for Mike Tomlin?" Asked former NFL scout John Middlekauff on his 3 & Out Podcast. "Would you part ways with your top 10 pick? I would sure think long and hard about it. Because these five and six-win seasons, no matter how much talent you have, suck. And the one thing you know, Mike basically guarantees you, (which is no longer good enough for the Steelers) winning 9-10 games and never going under 500. You know what the Chicago Bears would do to just every year go 10-7? So would they trade their first-round pick? I would, I mean, I would immediately."
