Latest RB rankings show Lions unit is on the cusp of greatness

Star power is underrated. It's something that the Detroit Lions, despite their plethora of success the last few seasons, haven't necessarily enjoyed as much star recognition as they should. The team never seems bothered by that, though, allowing their play to speak for them rather than status as stars in the NFL.

Two names that should be more household than not are Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, the Lions' explosive running back duo that, when healthy, are the best unit in the NFL in the backfield.

PFF recently released a ranking of running back units in the league, and to probably no one's surprise, Gibbs and Montgomery took a backseat to star running back Derrick Henry and Justice Hill with the Baltimore Ravens.

Now, Henry and Hill were certainly the better duo in 2024 compared to Sonic and Knuckles. Henry remains the highest-graded running back headed into 2025 by PFF, while Hill was fourth overall according to PFF. Montgomery led all backs with a 90.7 receiving grade, while Gibbs finished up right behind Henry in yards per carry with 5.7.

They're neck and neck. And, one healthy season between Gibbs and Montgomery can absolutely flip these rankings. That's what makes this year so exciting if you're a Lions fan - this duo could very well be the best one-two punch in the league in the backfield, and could dethrone King Henry.

Gibbs and Montgomery on cusp of dethroning Henry

While injuries bogged Gibbs and Montgomery down last season, with Montgomery missing some time, it's clear that they'll be relied on pretty heavily this season with the departure of Frank Ragnow making Jared Goff's foundation for his passing game a little shaky.

Both are set to once again run through the NFC North as they've been practicing and participating in OTAs ahead of the Lions' training camp, which kicks off July 26. Gibbs is a dark horse candidate for Offensive Player of the Year, as well as for MVP, while Montgomery is looking to bounce back after an injury-riddled 2024 season.

While Henry is likely to keep impressing in the Ravens backfield - especially since it literally never seems like he's getting slower as he ages - Gibbs and Montgomery can very well topple Henry's running back partner, Hill, this season. It's just a matter of Detroit ensuring their center situation doesn't hinder their run blocking success from season's past.
