The Lightning should consider upgrading their roster in this area.
The Tampa Bay Lightning currently sport a 10-7-2 record at this juncture of the season. Overall, it has been a decent start to the season for the Bolts, but they also have only won four out of their last 10 games. Thus, it is fair to argue that they should look to upgrade their roster before the trade deadline passes.
One specific area that the Lightning could look to improve is the backup goaltender position.
Heading into this season, there were some questions regarding Jonas Johansson as the backup. He had a shaky .890 save percentage (SV%) and 3.37 goals-against average (GAA) in 26 games last campaign. However, his struggles have hit a worse level early on in 2024-25.
At this point in the season, Johansson has a 1-1-1 record, a 5.22 GAA, and a .856 SV% in four games. He has also allowed 17 goals in his last three starts, including seven against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 21. This is a very concerning trend, especially when noting that he gave up at least five goals in each of those contests.
Due to this, once we get closer to the deadline, it would not be surprising if we see the Lightning target a cheap backup with experience. It is a position where the Lightning could use more overall depth.
