Lightning Have Interesting PTO Target in Ex-Oilers Forward

The Tampa Bay Lightning should consider taking a shot on this former Edmonton Oilers forward.

When looking at the Tampa Bay Lightning's current roster, it is fair to argue that they could use a bit more forward depth. Because of this, they have already given a professional tryout (PTO) contract to forward Logan Brown. However, it is worth noting that many notable names are still available for the taking, so they shouldn't be against bringing in another forward on a PTO.

One specific player who the Lightning should consider inviting to training camp is veteran forward Sam Gagner.

At this juncture of his career, Gagner is an extra forward who can provide decent depth offensive production when used. During this past season with the Edmonton Oilers, he had five goals and 10 points in 28 games. He also had three goals and nine points in 15 games with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Gagner, 35, is hoping to continue his NHL career, but he has yet to get a guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 campaign. However, he has confirmed that he has PTO offers on the table. When looking at the Lightning's group, they should seriously consider sending him an offer as well.

Gagner would provide the Lightning with another solid depth forward if he impressed on a PTO and earned himself a contract. Due to his ability to play both down the middle and on the wing, he could fit virtually anywhere in their bottom six.

In 1,043 career NHL games over 17 seasons split between the Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Winnipeg Jets, and Oilers, Gagner has 197 goals, 332 assists, and 529 points.
