During a recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman named the Tampa Bay Lightning as one of the teams believed to be in the mix for Jonathan Toews. With the Lightning needing to improve their center depth, it is understandable that they are reportedly eyeing the three-time Stanley Cup champion.
Tampa Bay Lightning should be looking to improve their forward depth this off-season after their quick playoff exit. It is clear that they would benefit by upgrading their bottom six, and they are now being linked to a notable free agent because of it.
However, the Lightning have another Chicago Blackhawks legend who they should also seriously consider making a push for as well - Patrick Kane.
When looking at the Lightning's roster, it is fair to argue that they could use more scoring on the wing in their middle six. Bringing in a veteran like Kane would provide them with just that, as he is still an impactful offensive contributor at this juncture of his career.
Kane, 36, had another solid season with the Detroit Red Wings in 2024-25, posting 21 goals and 59 points in 72 games. This was after the Buffalo, New York native recorded 20 goals and 47 points in 50 games with the Red Wings in 2023-24. With numbers like these, Kane would be an excellent addition to the Lightning's second line and power play if signed.
Kane's playoff success could also make him an appealing target for a team with Stanley Cup expectations for next season, like the Lightning. Like Toews, Kane was a major reason for the Blackhawks' three Stanley Cup championships during the 2010, including winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP in 2013. He has also recorded 53 goals and 138 points in 143 career post-season games, so he undoubtedly can step up in big moments.
Nevertheless, on an affordable short-term deal, Kane would have the potential to be a major pickup for the Lightning. Let's see if they end up targeting him this off-season from here.
