Lightning Superstar Opens Up About Steven Stamkos Departure

This Tampa Bay Lightning superstar discussed his feelings about Steven Stamkos no longer being with the club.

Earlier this offseason, Steven Stamkos' sensational tenure with the Tampa Bay Lightning came to an end. After hitting the free-agent market on July 1, the future Hall of Famer landed a four-year, $32 million contract with the Nashville Predators. He is now expected to be a crucial part of the Predators' core as they look to take that next step and become true contenders.

Stamkos' departure has naturally been hard on Lightning fans, and that also applies to their players, including superstar defenseman Victor Hedman.

While at the NHL North American Player Media Tour earlier this week, Hedman talked about Stamkos' stint with the Bolts coming to an end.

Here's what Hedman said on the matter: It was tough, obviously. We kept in contact a lot, but when it was July 1st and I realized he wasn’t coming back, it was shocking, obviously. He is the best ever to wear the Lightning sweater. He had 500 goals, 1,000 points, 1,000 games, two Cups, multiple awards and being the captain for more than a decade."

However, Hedman also noted that Stamkos won't only be missed because of his skill.

"But the person himself is going to be missed in the locker room and on the road, everywhere. It’s going to be a lot different going into the locker room and not seeing him."

The Lightning are undoubtedly entering a new chapter with the loss of Stamkos. The 2008 first-overall pick was the franchise's heart for 16 excellent seasons. His outstanding offensive production and leadership were why the Lightning had so much success during his time in Tampa. Thus, it is understandable that Hedman is sad to see him go.

It will now be very interesting to see how Hedman and the rest of the Lightning perform without their longtime captain from here.
