Lions $14 million starter predicted to leave Detroit for Raiders

The Detroit Lions revamped their secondary during the 2024 offseason, with one of the moves being the trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for veteran cornerback Carlton Davis.

Thus far, the new-look starting secondary, which features draft pick Terrion Arnold and free-agent signing Amik Robertson, also, has been solid as a group. Davis isn't having his best season, but he's been solid nonetheless.

Through eight games, Davis has allowed completions on 60.3% of the passes thrown his way, and he's surrendering a passer rating of 89.1. Not great, but he amounts to an upgrade over Cameron Sutton.

Davis' future in Detroit remains murky, though, as he's a free agent next year. And Bleacher Report's Scouting Department believes that Davis is going to leave Detroit in 2025 free agency to go to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Raiders' strategy of hoping Jack Jones would live up to the hype he created over the second half of last season has not worked out. Their hope that Jakorian Bennett would elevate his game to that of a dependable starter isn't looking good either. Nate Hobbs is the Raiders' best cover man, and he's a free agent this offseason.

The Raiders need a veteran starting corner who can stabilize the position. That's exactly what Carlton Davis has done with the Lions this year. The 28-year-old has come in and given the Lions a more consistent player at the position and could be signed to do the same thing in Vegas.

The fact of the matter is, Davis may have no choice but to find a new home in 2025. That's because the Lions drafted a second cornerback beyond Arnold in Ennis Rakestraw Jr., who figures to be the heir-apparent to Davis.

With so many big contracts to pay, the Lions would greatly benefit from replacing Davis with Rakestraw, who will come much cheaper because he's on a rookie contract for the next three seasons after this one.

But that will depend upon how confident the Lions are in the rookie, who hasn't had much of a chance to show anything because he's only played 43 defensive snaps over the six games he's appeared in.
