Lions Agree to Deal With Former Steelers Quarterback

Ahead of the Detroit Lions' playoff matchup against the Washington Commanders, they made an interesting decision.

Lions Agree to Deal With Former Steelers Quarterback

They changed their backup quarterback.

Throughout the regular season, Hendon Hooker had been the backup. For the playoffs they made the change to Teddy Bridgewater, who had spent the rest of the year coaching high school football.

That decision made it seem pretty unlikely that they would head into 2025 season with Hooker as the next man up at QB.

Now they've officially made a move that will bump him down the depth chart or maybe even led to the Lions letting him go.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Lions have agreed to a deal with former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kyle Allen.

The Lions will be Allen's sixth team of his NFL career.

He started his career with the Carolina Panthers after they picked him up as an undrafted free agent back in 2018.

Allen ended up starting most of his second season, putting together a 5-7 record while throwing for 3322 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Since then he has made just six starts while making stops with the Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, and Steelers.

Over the course of those stops, he has made just six more starts, going 1-5 and throwing for a total of 1165 yards and seven TDs.

Now he'll give the Lions a veteran presence behind Jared Goff.

Luckily, that's not something the Lions have really had to worry about much during Goff's time with the team as he has played all 17 games in each of the last three seasons.

It's good for them to have secured a better insurance plan, though.
