Lions elevate preseason standout who could steal a roster spot with a big game

One of the most fun players to watch for the Detroit Lions during the preseason was undrafted rookie Isaac Ukwu. The Ole Miss product had a big summer.

In three games he had five pressures and three sacks It seemed like wherever the ball was, Ukwu was there looking to hit that guy with the ball. He also had an impressive WWE style tackle for a loss that I wish someone had a clip of.

There was a lot of thought that he could potentially make the Lions initial 53-man roster, but the team went with James Houston instead. Now Ukwu will have a shot to maybe net a spot this time around. The Lions are elevating him to play against the Cowboys on Sunday.

If he has a good showing, he could definitely find himself a spot on the Lions roster. There's really two ways to get in. He could either fill the open roster spot the team has right now, or he could replace Houston, who has had a really rough season so far.

Judging by Dan Campbell's comments on Friday, it could be the latter since the team likes to keep that extra spot open for flexibility.

The question will be how much will we see him out there? It's clear he's making some headway with the Lions on the practice squad. They could have elevated veteran Patrick O'Connor here, but they didn't. That tells me they will definitely look to get him out there for 15-20 snaps. All he has to do is go out there and put up a good showing and the spot should be his.
