Lions Gifted Chance to Sign All-Pro CB After Release by Rival

One of the most interesting stories across the whole NFL this offseason had surrounded the Detroit Lions' NFC North rival, the Green Bay Packers, and their star cornerback Jaire Alexander. Alexander, who has only played 14 games over the last two seasons due to injuries, was set to be paid $24.6 million, according to Over the Cap.

Green Bay was unwilling to give the 28-year-old that type of money, given his injuries and off-the-field antics. As a result, the Packers were fielding trade offers. Unfortunately, Green Bay was unhappy with the offers they received, and Alexander was unwilling to take a pay cut.

This led to the Packers finally making a roster move on Monday morning. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Packers are releasing Alexander today.

While Detroit's cornerback room is set to succeed in 2025 and beyond, signing Alexander would make it even better.

Lions Cornerback Room Could Become Elite With Jaire Alexander Signing

The 28-year-old has earned All-Pro honors twice (2020, 2022) in his seven-year career. In 2020, Alexander tallied 51 tackles, 13 pass deflections, one sack, one interception, and one forced fumble. Furthermore, he recorded a grade of 90.6 in pass coverage and a grade of 74.3 in pass rush, according to PFF.

In 2021, Alexander only played four games due to injury. The following year. Alexander had another standout campaign. In 2022, he totaled 59 tackles, 29 pass deflections, and five interceptions. Moreover, he had a pass coverage grade of 82.1, a run defense grade of 71.2, and an overall grade of 80.3, according to PFF.

Based on Alexander's play over the past two years, when he's been healthy, it's clear that he is an elite asset. Even so, his health is unpredictable. During the 2023 season, he was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Then, last year, he suffered a PCL injury that kept him out the majority of the season.

That said, there is likely a low possibility of Detroit bringing in Alexander. Still, the Lions' cornerback room would benefit from having Alexander on the team, even if it does push second-year cornerback Terrion Arnold down the depth chart. Imagine pairing Alexander up with D.J. Reed; that would be a CB duo that's hard to stop.
