Lions Named a Potential Landing Spot for Former MVP Candidate As Insurance at Quarterback

Could the Detroit Lions still be in the market for a quarterback?

They were looking for a QB at the start of the offseason because of questions about whether they could rely on Hendon Hooker as their backup.

Signing Kyle Allen has been their solution so far this offseason.

However, there are still some veteran options in free agency who could appeal to the Lions if they aren't sold on Allen or Hooker.

For the Win's Cory Woodroof believes the Lions are a good fit for one of those veteran QBs.

In a recent article, Woodroof named the Lions as a potential landing spot for former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Carson Wentz.

Wentz has had an odd NFL career.

After a difficult rookie season, Wentz was dominant during his second year in the NFL. He threw for 3296 yards and 33 touchdowns before tearing his ACL in Week 13.

Despite the early end to his season, he finished third in the MVP voting that year and set the Eagles up to claim the NFC's top seed on their way to a Super Bowl win.

When he returned from the knee injury, he was still able to put together solid numbers. He threw for 3074 yards and 21 touchdowns while completing 69.6% of his passes in 11 games during the 2018 season.

The next year he threw for 4039 yards and 27 touchdowns while leading the Eagles to nine wins.

It was all downhill from there.

In 2020 he was benched after 12 games as he threw 15 interceptions and was sacked 50 times.

The following offseason he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts.

Despite winning nine games for them and throwing another 27 TDs, he found himself looking for another new team after a year in Indy.

His last chance to be a starter came with the Commanders in 2022. He started just seven games as he was outplayed by Taylor Heinicke in a QB battle that carried well into the regular season.

Since then he has spent the last two years as a backup.

Even with his struggles, the heights of his career were still a whole lot higher than anything we've ever seen from Allen and he is a much more proven option than Hooker.

The last two season may have also helped him put his game back together as he has been surrounded by some of NFL's best offensive minds with the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams.

The Lions would obviously be hoping to never actually see Wentz take the field if they sign him, but if Hooker and Allen don't look good early in the preseason then Detroit just might want to take a look at the player who was drafted right after their starting QB.
