The Detroit Lions currently have three quarterbacks on the roster in training camp in Jared Goff, Hendon Hooker, and Kyle Allen.
However, For the Win's Cory Woodroof doesn't believe the Lions are done adding to the position group. He predicts Detroit will sign free agent quarterback Carson Wentz to back up Goff.
"With Hendon Hooker still a relative unknown as a backup quarterback, Detroit could add Wentz to give them a little more peace of mind behind quarterback Jared Goff. Wentz is still a good backup in most any offense," Woodroof wrote.
Wentz spent the 2024 season as Patrick Mahomes' backup with the Kansas City Chiefs, and hasn't been a full-time starting quarterback since 2022.
Though his days as a starter are likely over, Wentz can still be a solid backup and fill in as a starter if needed.
The Lions could use a more experienced signal-caller as the backup behind Goff, and Wentz would provide that. The 32-year-old has started 94 games in his nine-year career thus far and has a winning record of 47-46-1. He even earned a second-team All-Pro nod in 2017 with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Hooker is currently slated to be Detroit's No.2 quarterback, but his lack of in-game experience is incredibly concerning. If general manager Brad Holmes wants to find a new backup signal-caller and demote Hooker to the QB3 role, Wentz would be a solid option who will come for cheap.
