Rod Wood was feeling spicy Monday.
Wood, the Detroit Lions president, took a jab at the divisional rival Green Bay Packers while speaking at the annual NFL draft luncheon hosted at the Detroit Economic Club.
Green Bay is set to host the 2025 NFL Draft this week, one year after the event was a smashing success in Detroit.
"Trying to get the NFL to consider bringing it back (to Detroit) because I don't think they'll ever top it," Wood said. "There's no way Green Bay will come close. They'll finish second or as I said to Brad (Galli), they'll finish third like they did last year," eliciting laughs and claps from the crowd.
The Lions finished 15-2 last season to win the NFC North for the second straight season, which included two wins over the Packers. Minnesota went 14-3 and Green Bay went 11-6 in a historic division race. The Packers earned the final NFC wild-card spot in the playoffs, but all three teams lost their first game in the playoffs and none were particularly close.
The Packers, of course, are winners of four Super Bowls, tied for fifth-most in NFL history, and have played in five.
Meanwhile, the Lions have never even played in the Super Bowl — the only NFL team that has existed for the entire Super Bowl era never to reach the sport's pinnacle.
But the Lions have owned the division the past two years.
The Lions have the No. 28 overall pick Thursday in Round 1, among their seven picks. The Packers pick at No. 23 and Vikings at No. 24.
