There's no doubt that the Detroit Lions are going to be looking for defensive line help this offseason and we know that Lions fans came away from the Super Bowl wanting their team's defensive line to look like the Eagles did in a dominant win over the Chiefs.
Well, Bleacher Report's Alex Kay feels the same way. He recently put together a list of best fits for some of the top free agents in the NFL and he is projecting that the Lions will sign Eagles interior defensive linemen Milton Williams. Here's his thoughts on the fit:
"The Detroit Lions would be an ideal landing place for Williams. Not only would he reinforce a defensive line that cratered last season after a string of injuries, but he’d be in an ideal position to dominate and contend for more Super Bowls by working next to an elite edge defender in Aiden Hutchinson."
It's hard not to see why Williams is getting some attention right now. The former third-round pick went off in the Super Bowl. He had four pressures, two sacks and a forced fumble. That is pretty good. He had a decent season too with 40 pressures and six sacks.
But does he really fit for Detroit? And does he fit at the projected four-year $50 million deal that Kay is projecting? Right now it's hard to say that he does. Williams is a good player, but the Lions already have a better player at the same position in Alim McNeill and he just signed a huge extension.
Don't get me wrong, the Lions do need to strengthen up their interior, but Williams would have to fight both McNeill and Reader to start in Detroit and that is a lot of money to pay a guy you don't think can start right away. The Lions would be better off retaining Levi Onwuzurike and adding a player they can build on in the draft.
If they absolutely want to add on in the interior. someone like Javon Kinlaw on a one-year deal worth $7 million would be a much wiser choice.
