Lions returning important depth piece on offensive line

The Detroit Lions are returning some offensive line depth with the re-signing of guard Kayode Awosika, according to an announcement from the team on Friday.

Lions returning important depth piece on offensive line

Awosika, 26, has been with the Lions since 2022 and has started some key games for Detroit, including the 2023 NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers. Awosika has made 37 total appearances with seven starts in the regular season, including two in 2022, three in 2023 and two in 2024.

Awosika rejoins a position group whose offseason has been highlighted by the loss of Kevin Zeitler but has a bright future in Christian Mahogany, a sixth-round pick in 2024 who made two starts in his rookie season and will likely have an inside track at winning one of the starting jobs in 2025.

Awosika played his college ball at Buffalo and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2021. The Lions signed Awosika off the Eagles’ practice squad after Week 1 of the 2022 season. If the Lions don’t add another starting-caliber player to compete with Mahogany and Graham Glasgow, Awosika should be considered the favorite to win the “next man up” role on Detroit’s interior.
