Lions Shouldn't Bring Ex-Pro Bowler Back (Even If They're Desperate)

The Detroit Lions have one of the league's best offenses, largely thanks to explosive wide receivers like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. Jared Goff, a strong offensive line, and great play-calling obviously help matters, but there's no denying the impact the pass-catchers make.

Of course, fans know the big weakness in the wide receiver room is a lack of depth. Detroit has cycled through a series of back-end wideouts trying to find supplementary options, and it wouldn't be surprising if the front office targeted the position in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Allen Robinson was among them, playing 12 games while alternating between the practice squad and active roster. And with such a need for depth, some fans are hoping to get his veteran presence back in the locker room.

At this point, though, no amount of desperation should result in re-signing Robinson.

Lions Have Easy Decision to Make With WR Allen Robinson

The list of reasons why Detroit has no reason to re-sign Robinson is long. He'll be 32 years old before the 2025 season starts, he doesn't have more than 410 receiving yards in a campaign since 2020, and he would block the potential development of a younger player with more upside.

During his 12 games in 2024, Robinson caught three of seven targets for 30 yards, playing just 91 total snaps while contributing nothing on special teams. Early in his career, Robinson notched two seasons with over 1,000 yards and one with a league-leading 14 TDs. He was a reliable player, but it's obvious that those days are behind him.

To make matters even worse, he's mulling retirement and might not want to play in the first place.

For Detroit, Kalif Raymond is a sold third option, yet the offense would benefit from injecting more youth at the position. St. Brown and Williams were both huge draft wins, to say nothing of tight end Sam LaPorta, and there are a lot of intriguing receivers in this class.

No matter how the Lions choose to address wideout, Robinson can't be part of the plans any longer.
