Lions Urged to Sign $9 Million Former Cardinals Starter

The Detroit Lions were urged to pursue a former Arizona Cardinals starter to add a veteran option at a position where they currently have some uncertainty.

One of the most interesting battles we will see play out during the pre-season for the Detroit Lions will come at right guard.

The team lost Kevin Zeitler to free agency this offseason, but have a bunch of options in play to replace him.

Christian Mahogany made a pair of starts as a rookie last season to fill in for Zeitler and looked good in those starts.

The team also has Giovanni Manu, who they drafted two rounds ahead of Mahogany, in the mix.

This offseason, they added a couple more options to the competition.

They spent their second round pick on Tate Ratledge and then took Miles Frazier in round five.

That gives them plenty of options to potentially find their starting right guard, but there isn't currently a frontrunner for the spot.

With that uncertainty, Detroit Jock City's Devon Platana thinks the Lions should target a veteran free agent at the position.

In a recent article, Platana encouraged the Lions to pursue former Arizona Cardinals guard Will Hernandez.

If the Lions aren't entirely sold on their guard options, Hernandez could be worth a look.

He only cost the Cardinals $4.5 million per year on his last contract and that was before the knee injury.

This offseason, he could be even cheaper despite having played well throughout his run as a Cardinal.

As I said yesterday when talking about the idea of the Lions trading for Joel Bitonio, there is no way to know if this is actually necessary for the Lions as the guard options are such an unknown quantity.

However, Hernandez could be a cheap insurance plan to give the Lions some veteran depth at the position as they figure out how to move on from Zeitler.
