The Green Bay Packers could ink their next franchise quarterback to a long-term deal in the very near future. The Packers have consistently prioritized the most important position in all of team sports. It seems to have paid off again.
Love finished the second half of the season performing as one of the best quarterbacks in the entire league. Now he is in line to get paid like one.
The Green Bay Packers May Have Just Hit A Major Snag In Jordan Love Contract Talks
According to Freddie Boston of FanSided:
Trevor Lawrence’s massive contract extension further complicates things for the Packers and Love. Presumably, Love’s team will want similar compensation, but are the Packers willing to meet that?
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer discussed a potential problem the Packers could run into.
“If the Miami Dolphins are worried at all about Tua Tagovailoa’s health, or the Green Bay Packers are worried about Jordan Love’s short track record, those guys wanting Lawrence’s guarantee structure could be a pretty significant problem,” writes Breer.
Breer noted that Love, Tagovailoa, and Dak Prescott are represented by agents working for Athletes First. All three quarterbacks could land new deals this summer.
“So it’s fair to say, just as Jefferson and Chase could help each other contractually, those guys will be able to do the same,” Breer wrote.
Love is going to earn a lot of money. There’s no doubting that. The question is how much he will make annually. Will the Packers match the league-high $55 million salary? Would Love consider accepting a deal for less than that? These are the conversations likely taking place between the Packers and Love’s team.
Love can point to his MVP-level numbers. The Packers will say it was across an eight-game sample size.
In the end, it’s in everyone’s interest to get a deal done sooner rather than later. Gutekunst wants the extension done before training camp, so that should be the expectation.
Will The Packers Get Love Signed To A Contract Before Training Camp?
Both sides seem adamant that contract talks are not only going well, but the late July deadline is more than feasible.
On ESPN Milwaukee on Tuesday, ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter shared an important update about Love’s situation, comparing it to the contract Lawrence got from the Jaguars:
“I don’t think anybody is holding it up. You’re having these talks, and they evolve as they go along. The latest factor that influences the discussions is the deal that Trevor Lawrence gets done with the Jacksonville Jaguars,” Schefter said.
“That deal doesn’t help Green Bay, that deal helps Jordan Love. Because the average comes in at $55 million and, breaking news, I don’t believe Jordan Love is taking less than Trevor Lawrence, just don’t think he’s doing it. So if the deal had gotten done a few weeks ago, I could’ve seen that number being $52 million, $53 million, and now I see that number being north of $55 million.
Not much north of, but north of $55 million. And by the way, the way the deal is also structured and set up, is not favorable to the Green Bay Packers and what they were hoping to do.”
“They wanted to get this deal done and instead, it’s a situation where before, they could have said ‘you’re not Joe Burrow yet, so you should get less than $55 million’. They could’ve said that.
Now, they can’t say that because Lawrence just gets $55 million,” Schefter added. “To me, that was not a win for the Packers that this deal came down. We’ll see how it works out, but Jordan Love is in a favorable spot.”
