New Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Andrus Peat is hoping to make a big impact with his new team after inking a deal following a tryout.
Peat, a former first-round pick out of Stanford and three-time Pro Bowler, is not the usual depth signing a team makes, but at this point in his career, he can play both tackle and guard and be a fine spot starter.
For Peat, joining the Steelers organization is just the first step in proving to himself that he can play at a high level.
“It’s a part of football, especially going to a new organization. I don’t take this opportunity for granted, so I’m gonna work my way up and keep working,” Peat said.
Peat says he does not know if he will play tackle or guard just yet, but he did take left tackle reps on Thursday. The Steelers seem to want him to play there first with swing tackle Calvin Anderson battling a soft-tissue injury.
Peat can play both left tackle and guard, but he has not played much on the right side of the offensive line. That is a place the Steelers might shy away from using him.
“It’s definitely something you gotta work on, especially if you’ve played there your whole career, but I feel like if I needed to, I could play on the right,” Peat said.
Peat called the Steelers organization a ‘great place with tradition’ when asked why he was excited to sign there, and he knows plenty about the history of the Steelers.
For where he is in his career nearly a decade in, Peat still feels like he has a lot to give on the field.
“I do. I feel like I have a lot left, but I feel great, feel healthy, so I’m ready to go,” Peat said.
Peat has played both left guard and left tackle throughout his career. He did not play much for the Las Vegas Raiders last year, but played 715 snaps at left tackle for the New Orleans Saints in 2023.
Over his career, Peat has played mostly left guard, but has over 1500 snaps at left tackle, too. That gives the Steelers versatility to use him as they see fit.
