Matt LaFleur drops major hint that Packers could sign a quarterback and kicker

His answer speaks volumes.

That's a wrap. The Green Bay Packers have completed their preseason and must now determine their No. 2 quarterback and kicker before roster cutdowns on Tuesday.

Michael Pratt and Anders Carlson looked to have moved ahead in their respective positional battles, but poor second-half mistakes provided an untimely reminder of the inconsistent play we've seen all summer.

Pratt threw an interception in the red zone and then got hurt trying to make a tackle. Carlson had previously made a 54-yard attempt but missed a chip shot from 32 yards late in the fourth quarter.

They both showed their talent but also their inconsistency. Unfortunately, neither quarterback Sean Clifford nor kicker Greg Joseph have faired much better this summer.

Matt LaFleur leaves door open for Packers to sign quarterback and kicker off waivers

It leaves the Packers with a simple question: Is their Week 1 backup quarterback and kicker on the roster currently?

Reporters first asked LaFleur about the kicking situation in his postgame press conference.

"That's not even a question for me," said LaFleur. "We've got a really good sample size, and we'll see what happens around the league."

That last line is notable, referring to potential roster cuts around the league. He gave a similar response when asked about the Pratt-Clifford quarterback battle.

"We'll see. Again, I think it's similar to the kicking competition," said LaFleur. "There was some really good moments, and then there's some things that we absolutely have to do better. We'll evaluate everything that's out there for us."

It's hardly a ringing endorsement. LaFleur obviously didn't reveal who was ahead in either positional battle, but he left the door wide open about the possibility of bringing in outside help.

All eyes will shift to the free agency pool of quarterbacks and kickers, a list that will grow once teams begin making roster cuts over the next 72 hours. The Packers have completed training camp and the preseason, and their Week 1 backup quarterback and kicker may still not be on the roster.
