On February 1, Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison made a move that he thought would give the Mavs the best shot at winning a title right now and into the future.
Harrison decided to trade Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis and Max Christie, and this shocking move immediately triggered a huge uproar in Dallas that still hasn't calmed down. Fans were heartbroken that Harrison even considered trading Doncic, especially considering he had just led the team to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2011, but Harrison didn't care.
He wanted to make the team's identity defense, and he was ecstatic to try to turn Davis into Dallas' new superstar and start a new era of Mavs basketball his way.
So far, this trade couldn't be going any worse for the Mavs, as Doncic has been dominating for the Lakers while Davis and the Mavs did not make the playoffs. Fans being forced to watch Doncic in a Lakers jersey in the postseason is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the pain they've been through since the trade went down, and the negative consequences of this controversial move keep on hitting the Mavs.
Mavericks could lose $1 billion due to Harrison's mind-blowing decision
Ever since the trade went down, the fan engagement has noticeably been much lower. The most electric atmosphere inside the American Airlines Center all season was Doncic's return game in April, and while there were some other exciting moments at other points of the season (including Davis' Mavs debut), nothing will top Doncic's 45-point homecoming game. Doncic is still at the center of Mavericks fans' hearts, and their love for him will never fade away.
Fans' anger with Harrison has led to countless "fire Nico" chants inside the arena as well as several other events in Dallas over the last three months or so, and Harrison made everything worse during his end-of-season press conference by stating he didn't understand how much Doncic meant to the fan base. This was the straw that broke the camel's back for many Mavs fans who remain devastated by the trade, and the worst is yet to come for Patrick Dumont's Mavericks.
In an appearance on "The Right Time with Bomani Jones," ESPN insider Tim MacMahon predicted that the Mavericks would lose up to $1 billion of revenue during the time that Doncic's supermax contract extension would have run in Dallas. He argued that this decision was just as bad of a business move as it was a basketball move, and he couldn't have been more right.
MacMahon continued to talk about how the business part of the Doncic trade could end up costing Harrison his job down the road, and him convincing Dumont that giving Doncic a supermax decision would have been a bad decision was the worst part of it all.
Signing Doncic to the supermax he was eligible for this summer would have helped them land a much bigger trade return than the package they received from the Lakers, and seemingly every aspect of this trade has been handled horribly by Harrison and the Mavericks.
Next year will be the first real chance at seeing Harrison's vision try to come to fruition, but it's going to be a huge challenge for Dallas to have a solid year. They'll likely try to run it back with a similar roster to the one they had at the end of the season last season, and Kyrie Irving is set to miss significant time due to his ACL injury.
Harrison only made things harder on himself and the team by trading Doncic, and Dumont is likely going to be furious over the next few years when thinking about how much money he is truly losing without Doncic in Dallas.
