It has been known for weeks that the Dallas Mavericks are searching for guard help this summer, and the rumors are starting to flow in regarding how they plan to address that need. The Mavericks are interested in trading for an additional first-round pick in search of another guard, and they have also been in some trade rumors that fans have been all over.
The Mavericks have been linked in trade rumors to Lonzo Ball and Jrue Holiday, and a fan-favorite target from Mavs fans recently joined this list. According to Andy Larsen of The Salt Lake Tribune, the Mavs and Utah Jazz have discussed a trade involving Collin Sexton.
Larsen noted that these talks have not been serious, but the fact that the Mavericks have explored a trade for Sexton is music to Mavs fans' ears. They need a guard badly, and while the Jazz's asking price may end up being higher than Mavs fans are comfortable with, Sexton would be a major difference-maker right away.
Mavericks eye trade with Jazz for Collin Sexton
Mavs fans have been begging Nico Harrison to trade for Sexton for weeks, and with Dallas showing rumored interest in him, he should become a player on fans' radars ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft next week, as Utah could end up drafting a guard and want to give him the keys to the offense right away alongside Lauri Markkanen.
Last season for the Jazz, Sexton averaged 18.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 0.7 steals per game while shooting 48 percent from the field and a career-high 40.6 percent from downtown. Sexton's efficient 3-point shooting combined with finishing around the bucket, motor, and growth as a playmaker make him an extremely intriguing target for the Mavs, as he would be a great fit and would fill their biggest need.
Dallas is searching for a starting point guard to replace Kyrie Irving until he returns from his ACL tear, and Sexton would be able to fill that role easily. He started in 61 of the 63 games he played for Utah last season, and he would be able to effectively start at the one while later transitioning into a role off the bench.
His knack for scoring makes him someone who could even start next to Irving in certain scenarios, and with the Mavericks' massive frontcourt of players like Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg, and Dereck Lively II on the back line, they wouldn't have to worry about players blowing Sexton and Irving. Sexton has also improved significantly as a secondary playmaker throughout his career, and he could be leaned upon to take on the role of being a primary initiator for the first half of the season.
On top of Sexton's dazzling speed, knockdown shooting, and strong finishing at the rim, he brings a tenacity and fire that is unteachable and rare in today's league. He loves to push the ball in transition, dive onto the floor for loose balls, fight through screens, and bring energy for every second he is on the floor, and the Mavs need someone like this. Jason Kidd wants Dallas to play faster next season, and Sexton would help them do that.
His fearless mentality would be invaluable in the Mavs' locker room, and with them trying to win a title soon, he would help get them closer to that goal. Sexton already has a connection with Davis and Lively II, as he is a Klutch athlete, and this connection could help Harrison get him to Dallas.
It remains to be seen how interested the Mavs are in trading for Sexton, and the next few days could be telling of their approach with the draft quickly approaching.
