FRISCO — Last week, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs sparked headlines with his unsolicited comments about the Dallas Cowboys. Gibbs said he would be "sick" if he were a Cowboy during an interview with Kay Adams.
That of course triggered a response from Micah Parsons. The Dallas Cowboys' defensive star wears his team's pride unabashedly and did not enjoy Gibbs' comments.
But in a new episode of "The Edge Podcast," which he hosts, Parsons and teammate Trevon Diggs delved into the allure of the running back position in connection with the Cowboys.
"Everyone wants to come play for America’s Team. We don’t gotta get on the media and start cappin’ (lying), how many people tell Jerry ‘come get me’. We’re not even going to throw names out there…
"It’s a tax-free state. You’re going to get more marketing dollars than you ever had – in one year – than you ever had. And then the running back success that we’ve had in Dallas…”
Parsons then went on to list the big names of Cowboys' running backs including, Emmitt Smith, Tony Dorsett, DeMarco Murray and Ezekiel Elliott. Now the first two names on that list have the more illustrious resumés, but nonetheless each player has achieved in their time with The Star.
However, is Parsons sending another message behind his Cowboys' praise? Jerry Jones and his front office team will have several personnel decisions to make this offseason with one of the bigger choices coming in the backfield.
Whether they admit it or not, the Cowboys will have money to spend in the offseason and a first-round pick that certainly holds value. Utilizing their financial resources or one of their draft picks, it is assumed they will get another running back.
But in Parsons' description, the right fit is not just a "prove-it" deal veteran or a late-round waiver. It seems Parsons wants his team to find a star to place behind quarterback Dak Prescott in the Cowboys' backfield.
Immediately, Ashton Jeanty comes to mind though Dallas could shop for a vet as well.
Either way, the Cowboys - who to their credit are having some success with Rico Dowdle - need a running game more consistently explosive than what they have found through the entirety of the 2024 season as they move forward. Perhaps identifying their next backfield star in the offseason can help solve that problem.
