It’s been almost two years since the conclusion of The Walking Dead on AMC, and during that time we’ve been treated to numerous spin-offs from the popular post-apocalyptic series, including Dead City, The Ones Who Live, and Daryl Dixon, all of which featured beloved fan-favorite characters returning to reprise their roles from the original show. One member of the crew we have yet to see pop back up, however, is Abraham Ford, who became a mainstay in the wasteland in Season 4, and lasted all the way up until Season 7. Portrayed by Michael Cudlitz, the former U.S. Army Sergeant met his demise at the hands of Negan, but that isn’t to say Cudlitz is done with the role yet, as there’s still a chance we could see him return.
Speaking with ScreenRant to discuss the final season of Superman & Lois in which he portrays Lex Luthor, the subject of The Walking Dead was broached, with Cudlitz revealing that he would definitely be interested in returning to the franchise should the opportunity arise, mostly due to how much fun it was to work with the ensemble cast.
"Yeah, 100%. We've talked about this before - I love that world. I had a great time in it. I don't think I've had as much fun on a set prior or since. It was a wonderful world to be part of and there was talk, at one point, about something with The Walking Dead universe. The Tales of The Walking Dead, I think they called it. They did six episodes of that where it was almost like a Black Mirror-type, alternate universe thing."
As Cudlitz mentioned, Tales of the Walking Dead premiered in 2022, and was a six-episode anthology series that was set in the same universe as the overall franchise, but bent the rules in a sense to deliver episodes that featured time loops and twist endings à la Black Mirror. The spin-off was met with generally favorable reviews, and though it only lasted for a brief period, it doesn’t appear as if we’ve seen the last of that particular format.
How Can Abraham Return to The Walking Dead if He’s Been Killed?
Announced in April 2023, More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe is set to continue the anthological nature of its predecessor to tell more stories focused on new and existing characters, one of which could be Cudlitz’s Abraham. As he revealed in that same interview with ScreenRant, he believes that one of the unused scripts tells the origins of the red-headed Sergeant, which means there is a possibility that we could still see more of him if the stars align despite his character being killed off in the main franchise.
"I think one of the scripts they had - and still have - is sort of an Abraham origin story, and they've talked about that prior. If they came to me with that, and the timing of everything worked out, absolutely. I love those guys, I had a wonderful time doing it."
There’s been little movement on the series since it was made known last year, as the following month the WGA strike began, with SAG-AFTRA joining them on the picket line in July. Now with Hollywood back in full-swing, here’s hoping we can get an update sooner rather than later that spells good news for both Cudlitz and the fans who can’t seem to get enough of The Walking Dead.
