The Dallas Cowboys are reeling eight games into the 2024 NFL season, and head coach Mike McCarthy seems tired of biting his tongue.
While the longtime NFL head coach has led the Cowboys to a 12-5 record in the past three seasons, it hasn't resulted in much support from owner Jerry Jones. The proof comes from the fact that McCarthy is currently in the final year of his deal, and Jones seems ready to decide on his future after the year.
But with the Cowboys currently 3-5 and now without quarterback Dak Prescott for the foreseeable future, the potential for another playoff berth looks bleak. Prescott's injury is certainly a hit to the team's chances, but even with the NFL's highest-paid player under center, the Cowboys have lacked offensive weapons.
Ahead of the team's Week 10 matchup with the rival Philadelphia Eagles, McCarthy answered a question about his approach to the offseason and draft.
He proceeded to point out the need to add veterans early in free agency (the Cowboys did not) and to make sure that the team has "everybody here in April" (CeeDee Lamb's long-winded contract extension negotiation).
"You try to make sure through veteran free agency that you have the spots so you know you can at least go play a game today," McCarthy said. "... I personally, as a head coach — when you're signing veterans in [training] camp and you're doing things at the end, I think that's a pretty big challenge."
"If you can have everybody here in April, when that draft's over, and you lined up, and you have that 90-man roster. If you can get to work on continuity and consistency, I think that's a huge factor in the start of your season."
The Cowboys' front office, and Jerry Jones specifically, have taken plenty of heat for the team's lack of urgency and free-agency moves this offseason. It was especially noteworthy after Jones declared the Cowboys were "all in" after the team's 48-32 playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers last season.
McCarthy's comments clearly point to a team that hasn't built depth or approached the season in an ideal fashion. The Cowboys not only failed to address areas of need in free agency, but their failure to get CeeDee Lamb's contract extension done early enough resulted in the star wide receiver missing all of training camp.
The Cowboys are paying the price for these things, and McCarthy made sure to point that out.
