The Tampa Bay Lightning made three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals, but according to Mkhail Sergachev, it was Jeff Blashill that ruined their chances.
In the early 2020's, there was no team more dominant than the Tampa Bay Lightning, a squad that went to three straight Stanley Cup Finals, winning two of those and cementing themselves as a modern day great squad.
Then, the rest of the league caught up, and especially their state rival in the Florida Panthers, who have been to the next three on behalf of the Eastern Conference, but it didn't have to be that way.
According to Utah Mammoth defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, part of the blame for the team not getting deep into the post-season again has been Jeff Blashill, who is now the Head Coach of the Chicago Blackhawks.
When asked about the Lightning downfall, Sergachev called out Blashill, stating that he came in and started changing their system for no reason, stating that the team 'needed to start playing more like Vegas'.
And then we changes out system... The coach from Detroit came in, and I mean we had gone to three straight finals, and this guy comes in and says 'we're not playing like that anymore, we're playing like f**king Vegas'.And we're all like 'Why?' and he goes 'They have a better system, it will work for us'. Well it didn't work for me, it didn't work for anyone. Everyone ended up with a negative plus/minus.
This is a scathing indictment of Blashill and the role he played in Tampa Bay's recent struggles, and while this may not have been the only reason that the Lightning struggled to get back to the Stanley Cup Finals, it appears to be a big one, and it's a shock that the coaching staff let this happen.
