in a great spot long-term. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has worked hard to maneuver the roster with the salary cap and the roster to get it in a healthy state.

Overall, he's done a great job ridding the roster of bad contracts and getting the flexibility to handle whatever is thrown their way. That occurred this year when the Vikings were dealt issues at the cornerback position in July that led to the signing of Stephon Gilmore.

The Vikings salary cap is dire for the remainder of 2024

Going into training camp, the Vikings had nearly $19 million in salary cap space. It slowly started to shrink with the Vikings signing players like Stephon Gilmore and Fabian Moreau to contracts. Plus, you have to account for the practice squad, lists like injured reserve and physically unable to perform. That money starts to add up.

Per Over The Cap, the Vikings currently have $418,023 in salary cap space ahead of week one against the New York Giants. That isn't a lot of money for the Vikings to spend but there are ways to create more. They have contracts they can restructure to create salary cap space, with the most notable being right tackle Brian O'Neill.

It's also important to understand where the money is going.

  • Dead money: $65,342,421
  • Practice squad: $4,388,400
  • Injured reserve: $10,029,071
  • Physically unable to perform: $14,041,176

Having over $24 million on reserve lists stinks for many reasons but T.J. Hockenson (on PUP) is primed to return sooner rather than later.

It's important to know what is going on with the salary cap during the season for both in season purposes and the future of the organization. Right now, the Vikings could use some extra money but they will have to work to get there.
