Missed penalty against Chiefs WR DeAndre Hopkins in Week 14 vs. Chargers dispels common narrative

Many NFL fans believe that the Kansas City Chiefs always get all the calls from the officials.

So, how do you explain what happened to DeAndre Hopkins in Sunday night's primetime matchup against the Las Angeles Chargers?

On a third down attempt in the second quarter, Mahomes tried to connect with Hopkins downfield. While it was clear there was contact from the Chargers defender, the officials claimed that the pass was uncatchable, and thus it couldn't be pass interference.

However, even if that's the case, there was another potential call to be made.

The broadcast did say that this officiating crew isn't known for calling many holding (or illegal contact) penalties downfield, but this seemed like an obvious miss.

That forced the Chiefs to punt in this low scoring game, with Kansas City only leading 6-0.

And the reactions from reporters and fans poked fun at the misconception that the Chiefs always get all the calls.

If they aren't getting the obvious calls such as this one, how can people say that everything always goes their way?

This immediately brought to mind something legendary quarterback Tom Brady said about Kansas City's record earlier this week.

"You're going to have close games, you're going to have blowouts. To win the close games is always the mark of a really good team. To win when you're not playing your best football is the mark of a very good team," Brady said on The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

They are winning because of their effort on the field and not because of the referees favoring them.

Plus, Hopkins got the last laugh, finding his way into the end zone to extend the Chiefs' lead a few minutes later.
