The Yankees previously were dealing with heavy rain, but now it’s pouring in the Bronx.
The reigning American League champions were dealt a massive blow earlier this week when 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery. And now, it looks like New York will be without another one of its best players for a good chunk of the campaign — if not the entire season.
The New York Post’s Jon Heyman on Thursday reported Giancarlo Stanton, who already was dealing with tennis elbow in both arms, has a “chronic calf issue.” According to Heyman, the Yankees now are viewing Memorial Day as an “optimistic” return target for Stanton, whose season will be “over” if he undergoes surgery.
Missing Stanton for significant time obviously would be a huge loss for the Yankees, who saw the slugger blast 27 home runs with 72 RBIs in the 2024 regular season. Stanton also was terrific in the playoffs, as he earned AL Championship Series MVP honors amid New York’s march to the Fall Classic.
All things considered, the Bronx Bombers’ mission to win the pennant again in the Junior Circuit is shaping up to be very, very difficult.
