'My time here is done': NaJee Thompson announces Vikings departure

On Tuesday night, the 24-year-old cornerback and special teams contributor took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that he is parting ways with the organization that gave him his NFL start. While the Minnesota Vikings have yet to make an official announcement, Thompson’s words suggest the decision has been made behind the scenes.

“Forever love to the organization,” Thompson wrote. “Unfortunately, my time here is done. Our paths may cross again, never count anything out, but injuries happen and I’ll be back on the field soon! To the state of Minnesota, thank you for all support and gratitude. Much love.”

Thompson’s journey with the Vikings began in 2023 when he joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Southern. Despite entering the league without much fanfare, he quickly earned a role on special teams and played in 15 games during his rookie year, recording seven tackles and a key fumble recovery.

Unfortunately, momentum stalled in 2024 when he landed on injured reserve, sidelining him for the entire season. Now, with a year remaining on his contract and no formal release yet issued by the team, Thompson’s departure raises questions — particularly about whether the move was injury-related or part of a broader roster shake-up.

The Vikings did announce Tuesday that they had waived offensive lineman Trevor Reid, but Thompson’s name was notably absent from official statements. That hasn’t stopped fans from sharing their appreciation online, praising his dedication, positive attitude, and contributions during his time in purple and gold.

Despite the disappointment, Thompson’s tone remained optimistic, signaling his desire to return to the field — whether with the Vikings in the future or with a new team willing to bet on his work ethic and potential.
