Mykel Williams' injury is another cause of concern for San Francisco

Georgia football fans and the San Francisco 49ers have something new to worry about after defensive lineman Mykel Williams went down with an injury during a joint practice with the Denver Broncos. The intimidating defensive lineman lay on the field as training personnel checked him out and audible sighs were heard when he walked off on his own power to get fully examined by the medical staff.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said provided an update on Williams after this injury and it doesn’t sound as bad as it originally seemed.

“We’re going to get a further evaluation now,” Shanahan shared via sfchronicle.com. “But it looked good when we examined him.”

Later reports indicated Williams had hyperextended his knee. Recovery from this type of injury typically take about a week, so he will have a chance to play in their upcoming preseason game against the Raiders.

As a first-round draft pick, Williams is looking to make an immediate impact for the 49ers defense. This injury, while not too serious, slows down his ability to get the needed game reps in before the grind of the regular season. As well, the 49ers are facing a recent rash of injuries across both sides of the ball. At least ten players are listed as questionable or out in their latest injury report.

With 21 total tackles, five sacks, and 5.5 tackles for loss in his last season with the University of Georgia, Williams has proven he can disrupt an offense with his rushing prowess. When will he truly be at full speed and ability after this hyperextension? Is there going to be any concerns in him playing a full game? How will this affect the play of other players on the 49ers?

These questions and more will need to be answered in the coming weeks as another Georgia Bulldog seeks to create winning situations at the pro level. If his recovery goes smoothly, opposing teams better keep an extra eye on Williams because he will make them regret it if they don't.
