Myles Garrett hasn’t changed his stance; he wants out of Cleveland. The Browns haven’t changed their stance; they have no interest in trading the 29-year-old pass rusher.
That’s the latest from ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, who gave an update on Garrett’s status after he publicly requested a trade away from the Browns last month.
“This is a text I got last week, ‘Myles is not open to discussing a contract extension with Cleveland. This has nothing to do with money. He wants to go win, and he wants to go to a place he feels he has a shot at doing that immediately.’ Now, the Browns feel just as strongly that they’re not trading Myles Garrett. So, somebody here is going to have to give or we’re gonna have to see how this unfolds,” Schefter said on Tuesday’s Pat McAfee Show. “I’ve always felt like this was a question of how dug in Myles Garrett is going to be because if he’s dug in, and he refuses to report back there and he makes it messy, then eventually, he’s going to get what he wants.
“But the process of getting there is going to be very tense, very complicated and very ugly. I don’t know how far he’s willing to push it. It is one thing to say he’s not willing to talk about an extension with Cleveland, he wants to go to a place that wins. It’s March 4 and you can say that. [It’s another thing] if he’s still saying the same thing on Aug. 4 — if and when nothing’s happened — and I don’t have the answer to that. All we know is the Browns have been unwilling to budge, the situation with Myles is he’s not interested in signing an extension.”
Myles Garrett explains requesting trade from Cleveland Browns, desire to win a Super Bowl
Garrett wants to win a Super Bowl and doesn’t feel his vision currently aligns with the Browns’ immediate future, he explained during a Super Bowl Sunday appearance on ESPN‘s “Postseason NFL Countdown.” Since entering the league in 2017 as the No. 1 overall pick, Garrett and the Browns have played in just three playoff games.
As a franchise, Cleveland has made the postseason in just three seasons since the turn of the century. The Browns are one of four teams to have never appeared in the Super Bowl. And as things stand, Cleveland appears far away from competing for a Lombardi Trophy.
The Browns went 3-14 in 2024 and own the No. 2 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft. Quarterback is once again Cleveland’s biggest need with Deshaun Watson suffering a second Achilles tear last month. Essentially, Cleveland is entering another rebuild. Garrett, who turns 30 next December, wants no part of that.
Garrett already has a Hall of Fame resume, with 102.5 sacks in eight seasons. A four-time All-Pro, Garrett won AP Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. He tallied 14.0 sacks this past season, his seventh consecutive campaign with double-digit sacks.
Adam Schefter addresses Myles Garrett, Eagles rumors
As for potential suitors, Schefter addressed the idea of Garrett going to Philadelphia and playing for the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles.
“I know there’s these questions and speculation of where Myles Garrett is going to wind up and that will be interesting if Cleveland moves off its stance. I know Philly’s been blurted out there. … There are no absolutes this time of the year,” Schefter said. “Anything’s always possible.
“But I don’t know Philadelphia — who is going to have to pay Cam Jurgens and Jordan Davis from the Class of 2022 and Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith from the Class of 2023 and Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean from the Class of 2024 and draft and sign at least some of their own players like Zack Baun — how are they finding the money not to mention the compensation, to go out and get Myles Garrett?”
