Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris sustained an eye injury in a fireworks accident at a Fourth of July celebration, his agent is reporting.

Harris, now with the Los Angeles Chargers via free agent, should be ready for the upcoming season, according to his agent, Doug Hendrickson.

"Najee Harris was present at a 4th of July event where a fireworks mishap resulted in injuries to several attendees," Hendrickson said in a statement released to USA TODAY. "Najee sustained a superficial eye injury during the incident, but is fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season."

The incident, according to police, happened in Antioch, California, occurred at around 12:18 a.m. on Saturday, July 5.

Police say that multiple people were injured in what is being termed an "explosion,'' with reports detailing that some were treated at the scene but that others actually needed to be hospitalized.

"This is an unfortunate accident, and our thoughts are with the family and all those affected during this difficult time," the Antioch police wrote. "We ask for patience and privacy for the families as the investigation continues."

The Mercury News reports that Harris went to both John Muir Hospital in Concord, California, and then to Stanford Hospital for treatment.

The severity of the Harris injury has been the subject of swirling rumors ... but it seems he will be fine as he launches his time with the Chargers, with whom he signed a one-year, $5.25 million deal this offseason.

This fireworks explosion comes on the heels of the 10-year anniversary of New York Giants pass rush star Jason Pierre-Paul losing two and a half fingers in a July 4 weekend accident.
