In an interview with ScreenRant while promoting Neighborhood Watch, his new film with Jack Quaid, Morgan teased what’s ahead for Negan in Dead City season 2. The actor teased that as the series goes on, Negan's evolution becomes more nuanced, saying, "When we first met him, he was the worst person in the world. And as time has gone by, we see a different side of him." Morgan went on to compare his experience with Negan to Quaid’s characters in his projects, and notes the arcs of their characters seem to be opposite of each other. Read Morgan's comments below:
With Dead City, I don't know that it's the last year at all, but I think it's forming this character who, when we first met him, was the worst person in the world. And as time has gone by, we see a different side of him.
Jack [Quaid] kind of plays characters that on the outside are really good, and then he's got this dark side. I'm the exact opposite. I always come out of the box real f--king dark, and then you find out that there's another side to him. I think that this year, we'll find out yet another side of Negan and his relationship, and how that works with Maggie in this world of post-apocalyptic New York. And, you know, the story continues. It's going to be a fun year.
What This Means For Negan In Dead City Season 2
It Could Be More Redemption Or More Complications
Dead City season 2 appears to continue Negan's redemption arc, which began in the final seasons of The Walking Dead. Once a brutal, bat-wielding warlord who murdered beloved characters like Glenn and Abraham, Negan has been slowly evolving into a more complicated man. His relationship with Maggie, who continues to mourn and harbor resentment for his past atrocities, remains the emotional centerpiece of the spinoff as a fragile truce weighed down by years of trauma and revenge.
Morgan's tease that "another side" of Negan will be revealed in season 2 makes it clear that the character's emotional journey is far from over, and audiences may see him confronted with choices that challenge even his newfound morality. This other side could involve him truly embracing a protector role and stepping into the kind of leadership that demands true selflessness. Alternatively, it may reveal persisting survival instincts that complicate his ability to change. With tensions between Negan and Maggie still unresolved, season 2 may explore whether redemption is a possibility or if he's destined to repeat his past.
Our Take On Negan’s Continued Evolution
Dead City’s Strength Lies In Its Emotional Complexity
Negan has always been one of the franchise's most divisive characters, and Morgan knows how to lean into that complexity with equal parts menace and charm. What makes Dead City work is not simply the walker mayhem or the gritty visuals, but the emotional weight carried by two survivors who are forced to rely on each other after years of bloodshed. Morgan's comments suggest that The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 will offer even more character-driven stories, continuing with Negan's shift towards redemption.
